The Backrooms

Game Mechanics / AI Programming

About the Project

The Backrooms was my first group project and was one of my first experiences with Unreal and was a very simple game, only taking two months to make. The player is meant to navigate through a maze-like facility and find a set of ladders to build their way out and escape the facility while an alien-looking creature roams the halls and chases the player.
My Contributions
My role in this team of 5 was to program the roaming enemy and to have it chase the player if it entered it's sight range utilizing Pawn Sensing. This led me to testing and using NavMeshes for AI. I also programmed the ability to pickup and carry the ladders to the exit to build their escape.

Reflection

This was one of my first experiences working with a group of people on a real game project which had it's issues. However, this game led me to adopt better work practices as well as teach me a lot of inter-personal lessons to help me function as a better member of the team on my future projects. This project also taught me a good deal in version control which is incredibly useful to have on larger projects.
