Cave Runner

Personal Project

About the Project

Cave Runner was a game that I created over the span of 3 weeks in order to experiment and learn new things that could be done in Unreal Engine. It was my first full solo Unreal project and was also used as a test to what a game that I created could look like. The game is short and has the player perform parkour puzzles to reach artifacts to unlock the end.
My Contributions
As the sole worker on this project, I had to create everything within the game outside of most of the textures which were retrieved from the Unreal Marketplace. I implemented a functioning double jump and stamina system, wall jumping, and an inventory system. I also was able to experiment with the event systems within Unreal to get sequential progress throughout the level.

Blueprint Example

In these blueprints, there are a lot of variables to control which walls you can run on, how fast it slows your velocity, as well as how far you go from when you jump off the wall. This was integrated with the stamina system to restrict the ability to do it infinitely since saving your stamina is needed on some puzzles.

Reflection

This project was extremely beneficial to me as a programmer as it let me learn the entire process behind Unreal Blueprints and helped teach me practices and concepts within Unreal which I still follow to this day. It was my first introduction into inventory systems as well as save states through checkpoints and was my first implementation of an entirely foreign mechanic being wall-running.
